The Department of Theatre and Dance at Nassau Community College provides enriched curricula for students enrolled in each of its discrete Associate in Arts degree programs: Acting, Dance and Technical Theatre.

The Department is committed to academic excellence. The undergraduate courses of study prepare students for transfer to four-year Baccalaureate or conservatory programs, along with a low student-to-faculty ratio provides for more personal attention in the classroom. Students have the opportunity to gain expertise in the fundamental areas of Theatre and Dance through an integrated program of study in a liberal arts context.

For students not majoring in Theatre or Dance, courses offered by the Department of Theatre and Dance may be used as Humanities or General Elective Credit. Specific courses satisfy NCC and/or SUNY General Education requirements.

Performance Opportunities

The Theatre and Dance Department offers students numerous opportunities to perform on stage, by audition, or to work in any one of the several technical theatre areas to hone their skills. The extensive open-to-the public Theatre Production Program features a Broadway Musical, a Children’s Musical, a joint production with the Africana Studies Department, an evening of original dance works and a variety of classic and modern comedies and dramas each year.

Facilities

The Department’s facilities include two Acting (Smart) Classrooms, a Dance Studio, Scenery Shop, Costume Shop and Prop Room, Technical Lab, as well as offices and two theatres, the 199-seat Mainstage Theatre and 99-seat Little Theatre.

Advisement

It is highly recommended that all students meet with a Theatre and Dance Department Academic Adviser each semester to create their class schedule. This is an opportunity for us to discuss student goals, review student progress and make sure appropriate courses are taken in the proper sequence.

Production Program

The Theatre and Dance Department's extensive open-to-the-public Production Program includes a major musical, a children's musical, a joint production with the Africana Studies Department, a dance concert and a wide variety of dramas and comedies. Auditions are open to all students enrolled in a minimum of six credits at the College. The Production Program serves as a closely supervised laboratory for the Department's acting, dance and technical theatre courses and as an effective mechanism for taking education beyond the walls of the classroom.
