Nassau Community College offers the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Chemical Technology. The two-year, 64 - credit program is designed for individuals looking to establish a career path in the chemical industries. The required course of study includes both classroom and laboratory work in general, organic, analytical chemistry and chemistry research; and promotes students’ understanding of chemistry fundamentals and modern instrumentations, and as well develops students’ laboratory skills, analytical and scientific reporting abilities. With the requirement of courses in ‘writing in the sciences’ and ‘public speaking’, the program elevates students’ communication and technical writing skills. In addition to course work that explores the various aspects of the chemical sciences and applied practices, the curriculum also offers the courses that meet general education requirement for the liberal arts and science, including English, elective credits in mathematics, social sciences, and humanities.
The Associate of Applied Science program qualifies graduates for the immediate employment as chemical technicians in laboratories or manufacturing facilities in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental, pharmaceutical, agricultural and the other industries. Additionally, career opportunities are present in research, educational and medical organizations where the AAS graduates work as chemical, biological, clinical, forensic technicians or other related professionals.
The enriched curriculum of the program also provides a strong foundation and preparation for a successful transfer into a four-year bachelor’s degree in the disciplines such as chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, biology, environmental science, science education, and other related sciences; as well as medicine or health science related professional programs such as pharmaceutical sciences, dentistry, physical assistant, and physical therapy.
