Active Shooter

Definition of an Active Shooter – Individual(s) actively engaging in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined space or populated area. There is no pattern and the events are unpredictable.

There is no profile of the shooter(s). The shooter is someone who has an avenger mindset, like he/she has been wronged, but there are always warning signs and everyone should be vigilant and notify Public Safety and the Nassau County Police if a threat is suspected.

What to do during an Active Shooter Event?

Run

If there is a safe escape path attempt to evacuate in a direction away from the shooter. Do not hesitate; every second matters. Leave all personal belongings behind and don’t stop until you are in a safe place away from the incident. Call 911 when it is safe to do so.

Hide

Lock and/or barricade the door of where you are. Silence your cell phone, if possible, hide behind large objects and prepare a plan with the other people in the room with you if there are any.

Fight

Commit to your plan. Look for any objects in your area that can be used as improvised weapons to incapacitate or disorient the shooter. Remember you’re fighting for your life.
