The Civil Engineering Technology (AAS) program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs. The ABET accreditation process ensures that each program has a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate and improve the quality of the program. ABET accreditation is assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. For example, an accredited civil engineering technology program must meet the quality standards set by the engineering profession.
In support of Nassau Community College’s mission, the Civil Engineering Technology program offers a curriculum that develops critical thinking, communication, and technical skills necessary to enter the workforce or pursue an advanced degree. The program strives to instill the importance of life-long learning, the ethics required for the profession and a respect for diversity.
Graduates of associate degree programs typically enter careers in construction testing, operation, and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure and may produce and utilize basic construction documents and perform basic analysis and design of system components. The curriculum must provide instruction in the following curricular areas:
The Civil Engineering Technology (CET) Area has an advisory board that represents the local civil engineering/construction industry on Long Island, NY. We have both private and public advisory board members representing all different size companies and organizations. Many of the members serve as officers of the Long Island and Metropolitan Sections of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The connections to these professional organizations aid in molding the CET program to prepare students to meet the current demands of this field. The advisory board meets at the end of each academic year in May.
The Advisory Board’s responsibilities include the following:
