SUNY Nassau Community College student Justine Rice was recently named to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-New York Academic Team.
"I always knew I wanted to return to college to finish my degree, but figuring out how was always intimidating, especially while working. SUNY Nassau Community College offered me the flexibility to reenter college while being able to work and without having to rely on taking out large student loans. I also knew SUNY Nassau had an amazing nursing program that I hoped to get into due to its professional reputation in hospitals around New York.
My experience has been challenging but extremely rewarding. I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by great, supportive professors as well as my PTK advisors, which has made an incredible difference. In addition, spending time at hospitals during my clinical hours has only strengthened my interest in the nursing profession.
I found out about the Phi Theta Kappa All-New York team from my professors and the PTK national website. I wanted to participate in a group of like-minded, ambitious students and PTK's community service aspect really resonated with me. I feel incredibly grateful and honored not only to have been recognized by PTK as a national organization but also to have been nominated by my advisors, whom I have become close to over my last several semesters as PTK's president at SUNY Nassau.
As you may have guessed, I plan on becoming a nurse, although I am still deciding my area of specialty."

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Nassau Community College has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.
