Joshua Vijayarajah is a member of the Speech and Debate Team at Nassau Community College. He recently served as a co-captain during the 2020-2021 school year.
My favorite part of the Speech and Debate Team is the friendships I have made and the ability to make a difference by learning how to advocate for change through public speaking. I have gained so much throughout my experience in the team. I have grown more confident in my ability to communicate with others and articulate ideas.
I have made great friends from NCC and met other students from colleges from across the country who are like-minded and want to help make the world a better place through advocacy. The team doesn’t have a set meeting time. We compete in tournaments on the weekends hosted by other schools. We also sometimes host our own tournaments where we all perform our speeches, interpret (acting) events, and debate others on current events.
During the semester, you will have individual practice sessions with Professor Webb and Justin, the Assistant Coach. I would say joining was the best decision I ever made, and it made me a better person and made me realize the power of truth, advocacy, voice, and legacy, which is our team motto.”
Students interested in joining the Speech and Debate Team should email Professor Trent Webb at Trent.Webb@ncc.edu.

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Nassau Community College has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.

"I served in the United States Navy in San Diego from 2014 to 2021, first on the USS Harpers Ferry and then on the USS Rushmore. When it was time for me to attend college, I chose NCC because it's veteran friendly and offers many different programs.
