I became a member of the U.S. Army in 1984.  I was 24-years old and did my basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.  It was the worst and best experience of my life.  It prepared me for everything life had to offer, the good and the bad.  After basic training, I returned to New York.  I developed a confidence that has helped me to overcome all of the challenges that were to come.

I am 60-years old and I served 22 years in the military and 23 years as a New York City Corrections Officer.  I am retired from both careers and this is my first college experience.  I chose NCC because of the excellent associates degree program in food and nutrition, as well as a supportive veterans program with a facility for the vets.  Along with a beautiful campus and excellent professors, the choice was simple.

My military experience prepared me for NCC by teaching me that nothing is beyond learning, if you put your mind to it.  That optimistic attitude and inner motivation has helped me in every challenge of my life.  My fondest memory at the College happened on my very first day, meeting the Veteran Affairs Department team and Dr. M.  I was so lost in the process, but they were so encouraging, patient and helpful that the whole experience made me want to start learning!

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Nassau Community College has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.

"I served in the United States Navy in San Diego from 2014 to 2021, first on the USS Harpers Ferry and then on the USS Rushmore. When it was time for me to attend college, I chose NCC because it's veteran friendly and offers many different programs.
