I served in the Navy as an engine mechanic for jets. I was stationed in Whidbey Island, Washington State. After doing my research, Nassau Community College seemed the most welcoming and suitable college for me. I was really nervous about this new chapter in my life. However, that changed the moment I came to the NCC VA office. I spoke with Dr. Manjares and a few of the veterans who work there and quickly got all of my questions answered and concerns addressed. In the military, I was put under a ton of pressure quite frequently. I also developed good working habits. These now translate into my being able to prioritize at school and handle the stress that comes with college. Whenever I come across a challenging time, I reflect on my time in the Navy. I think about everything that I have overcome and use it as motivation to keep on pushing forward.
When I finished my first semester at NCC I was still anxious, wondering if I made the right decision and if college was for me. However, making it through my first semester gave me the reassurance that I needed. To my surprise, I was also invited to the Honors Program, and I decided to challenge myself. It hasn’t been easy, but I haven’t looked back on my decision.

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Nassau Community College has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.
